Lights, Camera & Action – The Power Of Video Marketing

Let’s start with a refreshing piece of information.  You no longer need to have an expensive crew of 10 people and millions of dollars in camera equipment to produce video which in today’s world would be viral worthy.

Video has become easier to create and distribute.  Even for a video production company like us, this is good news.  We want out clients to succeed.  To do so you need to be on top of what’s current and you need to be able to spread your marketing dollars even further.

Here are some key reasons why video marketing is a powerhouse in your marketing portfolio.

Take a look behind the scenes

Video content gives brands an opportunity to get creative, show a little personality, and tell their brand story. Giving audiences a look at what’s going on behind the scenes and showcasing the some of the real faces behind the brand will humanize your brand and build trust with the audience.

Change the spotlight

Video content can also be an excellent way to turn the tables and make your audience the stars. Leveraging user-generated video content not only allows you to help your audience participate in the brand, but also gives marketers a break from producing original content in this fast-paced digital environment. The best way to reach Millennials and Generation Z is to create a conversation and ask for their participation. Millennials want to “co-create products” and are more likely to trust brands that ask for their input. Calling for user-generated video content is a great way to build relationships with this demographic and encourage your audience to get creative.

Kick ass with your SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Finally, video content is a great (and often underutilized) way to improve your site’s search rankings. As Digital Marketing Magazine points out, “we all know Google likes video – it owns YouTube – and having relevant, keyword optimized video content on your site can help increase its performance in terms of SEO.”

Video content is easily shareable, especially on social media, and provides a great opportunity to generate more links to your website (especially if the links are generated from reputable domains). Kissmetrics recommends including social share buttons on video embeds so that video content can easily be shared across multiple social channels with the click of a button. This strategy will also share the original video URL and increase social shares which will indirectly impact your SEO.

Show Your True Side

With the rules of video content drastically being changed and re-written daily, you are able to create content that speaks to your true personality of your company and your product line.  You’re seeing more and more videos rolling out online that engage humour.  Below is a video from A-1 Steak Sauce that they produced showing a humorous undertone.

As you read my blogs and find the content I post online it should be clear that you are seeing more and more focus on the fact that video is the tool you need to use to engage your marketing message with your audience.  It’s time to now stop reading and get creative.

Want to go to Disney?

While you may have always wanted to go to Disney the opportunity to go is one that is magical.   The reason I’m writing about this topic today is because I gave my daughter a trip to Disney as a Christmas gift this year.  We are actually leaving on the 22nd of January.  As of the time I’m writing this it’s 16 days (or 16 links on her paper chain left).

With something as exciting as Disney, the build up to the event can be as exciting as the actual time when you go.  This is the same type of magic you need to create for your customers.  Whether it’s the time leading up to the delivery of their new purchase, the anticipation of the arrival of their shipment via the mail.  You need to share this excitement with them.

If you have a traditional brick and mortar type store this can be achieved through the enthusiasm of your staff when interacting with the customers.  If they come back multiple times before making the purchase, find a way to remember who they are, ask them questions and learn one piece of information about them that you can ask about.  This will create a stronger customer relationship.

If you are strictly online, using an email marketing system like Infusionsoft would be a powerful resource to have because you can have automated purchase sequences build that go out after a point of purchase until the time when the product arrives.  Even if you sell in store you can marry both the online communication with that of in store to make a powerful relationship building system.  We call it Lifecycle Marketing and it’s comprised of 3 steps (Attract, Sell, WOW) – these links will give you a wealth of knowledge.

In conclusion, you hold the power to build a magical experience for those who come in contact with you.  Think about the experience you want to create and then make it happen!

What’s your typical customer lifecycle?

Do you know what your typical customer lifecycle is?  What if you know what your ideal customer lifecycle was?  Then you would have a better understanding of how to market, nurture and wow these customers so that they are not just a one hit wonder, but rather a customer for life.  Having a customer for life brings with it a far greater value.

Watch this 12 minute video as Scott Martineau of Infusionsoft explains the difference.

Why you need a CRM

Why do you need a CRM?  In reality a CRM is an essential part of running a successful business.  It’s a central location where you keep track of all your clients, customer, prospects and suppliers.  A CRM allows you to stay organized and have a reliable source for the information that is important to you.

Many small business owners don’t have a CRM in place in their business because they haven’t really considered the key benefits to investing in one.  Here are a few key reasons your small business needs a CRM

Organization

It’s a fantastic way to stay organized when it comes to client records, notes on file for those clients as well as upcoming important information pertaining to a future sale.  If you have a CRM like Infusionsoft, you will be able to do a whole lot more on the front end (prospect nurturing).

Compliance / Accountability

How many times have you gone looking for a piece of information because you needed it to prove something.  Whether it’s if something was sent, an email was opened or a phone call was made.  Having a proper CRM for your business will ensure you have a tool in place to make you accountable and compliant for all regulations.

Marketing Automation

This is a big one.  You can’t be everywhere all the time.  You’re not there to answer the phone 24/7, send emails to inquiries as they come in.  You have work to do.  Using a CRM like Infusionsoft will engage your prospects with the power of marketing automation.  Imagine if someone wanted inquire about a quote for a product or service and you would need valuable information in order to do that quote.  Using a CRM for that initial collection can happen automatically online while you’re essentially sleeping.  So that when you get to your desk in the morning, you have all the information needed and the prospect has been educated about your process via email at the time of submitting that key information to you.  We call it Lifecycle Marketing (Click to watch this video).

CRM’s coming in all shapes and sized.  Most of which have the ability to store information.  Infusionsoft on the other hand has a toolbox of other features and resources that will help you get organized, save time and grow your sales.

Let’s sit down and have a conversation either in person or over the phone about how I can help you achieve your small business goals with Infusionsoft.  Email me at shaun@bluecowcreative.ca

Push Me Coach

Yesterday we were picking our daughter up from cheer-leading class and she seemed a bit down.  When asked what was wrong she mentioned that they were doing push up and she told the coach she could not do them.  Come to find out, she could do them but it was the hand stands that were giving her problems.  At that point she was just upset that the coach was trying to get her to do something that was not easy for her.

We went on to explain that was the job of a coach.  They are there to push you further than you think you’re able to go.  It’s the way to grow, get stronger and become better at what you are doing.

I’m telling you this because it’s the exact same as in business.  Especially in the line of work that I do.  I’m a success coach when it comes to my clients.  I help them to think strategic, we develop an implementation plan and then we implement that plan into action.  Along the way I strive to make you think differently.  To think about your business and it’s marketing in a way that you have never done before.  For most this is a somewhat new concept and can be draining and daunting.  However when stuck with the outcome on the other end is far more prosperous and rewarding than when you went in.

Whether it’s a success coach, an accountant, bookkeeper, lawyer or mentor.  They are there in your life to coach you, push you to be your best and do things better than you have ever done.

Next time you feel the strain, push through and say, I’m ready coach….put me in the game!

The Day My Video Went Viral

You hear about it all the time. A video goes viral. However what does that really mean?

Well it happened to me the this week. Let me tell you about it.

I’ll rewind a bit and go back to the past weekend. My family and I took a trip to Port Hood Island, Nova Scotia to visit my father. While I was there I took aerial footage with my drone. Being my first time to the island I wanted to capture it’s beauty for the memories. Believe me when I say it was stunning.

Upon my return I took the clips and pieced them together with some music and posted on my company Facebook page.

4 Days later the video has been viewed over 17,000 times and the post has been seen over 50,000 times. While it’s not a video to make me rich, it did indeed boost my Facebook likes on my company page and brought brand awareness to what we are doing.

In case you haven’t seen the video, here it is.

Discover The Beauty Of Port Hood Island, NSDiscover the beauty of Port Hood Island. This was a personal collection of footage I took this past weekend while on vacation. Hope you enjoy.

As a small business you start to wonder about the power of online promotions and online publicity. Video is still very powerful and while you hear a lot about things going viral, you can not in anyway “create” a viral video or predict when one will go that route. You have to keep plucking away at creating things and eventually something will hit the right stream and be swept into the mainstream.

Here are my 3 tips on creating engaging video

  1. Keep it simple and clean – those watching the video need to “get it” withing seconds of watching it. Don’t use lots of heavy graphics and text, try to let the video speak for itself.
  2. Show a different perspective – Try to use angles and experiences on camera that most people are not use to seeing. This will keep them engaged.
  3. Spark emotion or humour – I feel emotions and humour are the two main triggers to get people to watch and share a video. The video above sparks two emotional triggers I would say (pride and passion). Majority of the the comments left on the video are from people who love Cape Breton, are living there or have moved away and miss home.

Hope that helps. If you’d like to have your next video produced by Blue Cow Creative, let’s talk. shaun@bluecowcreative.ca

How to take your clients money…faster!

I’m sure the heading of this post may have tweaked your curiosity.  For some it may of sounded a bit malicious, however it’s not.

In your business, especially if you’re a single business owner, cash flow is everything.  It’s about money money money. It’s what helps you live and operate.  I would almost compare it to the pulse of your business.  No pulse, no life!

However for must of us we are always doing the dance with our receivables, chasing down overdue payments or waiting on cheques to arrive.  I’ve seen and experienced a lot of this over my 15+ years as an entrepreneur in Canada.  Here are some tips I’m wanting to pass on that I’ve learned.

Tips for getting paid

  1. Develop a Process – Know how you’re going to be paid for the work you do before you even do it.  Have that discussion with your client, put your payment policy in your contracts, website or even email signature.  It’s about setting the expectation in advance.  For me I require a 50% prepayment on all projects before they begin.  This allows for cash flow to carry through the project.
  2. Make it Easy – The reason most payments are late is because the sender has to do many steps from receiving your invoice to sending your payment.  If you can make it easy to pay, you will get paid faster.  When I went from only being paid in cash or cheque to accepting online credit card payments, my receivables were down by 60%.  Payment timeframes decreased. Why? Because I made it easy for clients to pay.  To do this use an online invoicing system like Freshbooks or Quickbooks Online.  If you’re a business that goes out on the road and sells in physical locations Square is a great option.  It all runs from your mobile device and allows you to create online payable invoices.
  3. Embrace the New – Gaining popularity for payments is email money transfers or e-transfers for short.  Anyone with online banking (and who doesn’t have that), has the ability to send money via email transfers.  The best part is it doesn’t cost you anything to receive it.  It’s secure, it’s instant and it’s fee free.  For the sender they pay $1.00 to send one (some banks don’t charge).

If you don’t manage your receivables and get your cash flow constant, it’s a make or break for most businesses.  Pay attention to this and give it your full attention.

Good luck!….Chaaa-ching!

The Tooth Fairy & Your Business

Have you had a visit from the Tooth Fairy lately?  Probably not and for obvious reasons.

However, for my 8 year old last night, that was the case.  She had a tooth pulled yesterday at the dentist and last evening the tooth fairy came and brought her $10 (yes, $10 per tooth…don’t get me started on how that inflation happened).

This morning while I’m in the kitchen making her breakfast before school she started telling me about this, proceeding to explain some clear self perceived facts about said “tooth fairy”; I’ll list them below in case you didn’t know.

  • If you’re a boy, your tooth fairy is a boy as well. If a girl, she is a girl.
  • Each kid in the house has their own tooth fairy.
  • When you’re done losing teeth, your tooth fairy retires.
  • To find out their color, you put your tooth in a glass of water so when the Tooth Fairy has to reach in to get it, the water will turn the color that he/she is.

The reason I’m telling you this is because of the way it was told to me.  She is 8 and she whole heartily believes this.  The tooth fairy is real and the experience is as real as anything else in the world to her.  So this got me thinking two things as I sat down with my coffee.

The first is, what happened to our innocence? At some point in our lives we have given up the idealistic view of the world where the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny and Santa Claus ran freely to and from our house. Now we are faced with chores, sleepless nights and  taxes.  What if we for a day truly went back to that simplistic world?  How would we face our daily challenges?

The second is more important when it comes to your business.  What can I do today, tomorrow and this month to provide an experience for my clients that provide such excitement and anticipation similar to that of the arrival of the Tooth Fairy.  Think about your part, how can you build an experience around receiving your product or service that makes it special?  What you do is an important part of others lives (maybe not everyone in the world, but some) so how can you make that even more magical?

How will you deliver their Tooth Fairy?

What You Need To Do Before Flying Your Drone In Canada

It’s no surprise that the marketplace for drones has increased in Canada.  More and more Canadians are buying these quadcopters to add to their arsenal of equipment.  However there is a big bank of fog clouding our vision on what we have to do when flying our drones.

I’ve done a lot of research and have compiled the essentials you need to know.  First are you flying for recreation or commercial use?

Recreational Use (according to Transport Canada)

If your aircraft weighs less than 35 kg and is used for recreational purposes, you don’t need permission to fly, but please read and follow their safety guidelines.

Commercial Use

To fly your unmanned aircraft for work or research, you may need to follow strict safety conditions outlined in an exemption or apply for permission from Transport Canada. It depends on the type of aircraft, its weight, as well as how and where you plan to use it.

If your aircraft weighs 25 kg or more, you need to apply for a Special Flight Operations Certificate before you can use it.

Unmanned aircraft that weigh less than 25 kg may qualify for an exemption to the rules, which will allow you to fly without permission.

If your aircraft:

  • Weighs 2 kg or less and you can meet the safety conditions in the Transport Canada exemption for UAVs that weigh 2 kg or less, you don’t need permission to fly.
  • Weighs between 2.1 kg and 25 kg and you can meet the safety conditions in the Transport Canada exemption for UAVs that weigh between 2.1 kg and 25 kg, you don’t need permission to fly. However, you must notify Transport Canada by completing the following submission form.

Download This Guide (PDF)

UAV-Guide

Conclusion:

We love flying drones and as more and more people purchase them, the airspace will become crowded.  Be smart, learn how to use yours, take them to an open field and master the basics.  As with anything it will be those who abuse the freedom we have to fly now will ruin it for us in the future.

The Wake Up Call
Have you used a wake up call service when you stayed at a hotel?  Why did you do that?  We all have cell phones with alarm clocks.  Plus all hotel rooms have alarm clocks in them.  I’m sure it’s because you would say, “just incase”.  Because the hotel is offering that service, it’s probably a better chance nothing will go wrong with that and they will actually wake you up in time.  In almost all the cases when I used this service, my phone alarm clock went off before the wake up call came in (both were for the same time).
Why am I even talking about wake up calls and alarm clocks? It’s because I wanted you to get into the mindset of the beginning of your day.  Without any doubt we know there are morning people and then there are not morning people. Which are you? I myself am not a morning person because I’m a night owl. In my line of work I productivity to be heightened in the evening hours.  I attribute this to many of my clients not working at that time and I’m able to work focused on projects without interruption for longer periods of time.
Back to the morning. Think about how you start your days, do you know what it is you need to accomplish each day you wake up, or do you fly by the seat of your pants.  The ol’ “fake it til you make it” mentality.  I’m not saying the latter is bad, I’m just wondering how to you measure if you’ve had a productive day, a day which you have achieve your goals.  The only way to measure anything is to have a unit of measurement.  Let me give you an example,
If you fly by the seat of your pants and you get two new clients you may end your day on a high saying “Wow, this was a very productive day”.  When in fact you may not have actually been productive.  A common confusion is between “productivity” & “progression”.  When we gain new clients in our business, this is considered “progression”, you are progressing your business further.  Being “productive” would be achieving tasks, creating products, fulfilling services.  When you have a to-do list these are tasks that lead to being productive.  Being productive leads to being progressive.  Think about this in your business, are you bring productive, progressive or both?

The Software That Changes My Business

In 2009 I was struggling in my business.  As a solopreneur, I was living the multi-system chaos that exists in many businesses.  I had one system for emails, one for contacts, another for projects.  Nothing seemed to work together.

That changed when I decided to take a look at Infusionsoft.  I was reluctant to take on a system that did everything (as they claim).  But I thought I would do it.

In my first year I was able to double my business and growth without adding another person to my business.  I was sold.

Since then, I’ve become certified as an Infusionsoft Partner and help other business owners grow their business through Lifecycle Marketing.

Our Competitors

We are are asked all the time how Infusionsoft compares to the other solutions that are out there.  Here is a list of the common solutions we consider a competition and how they compare.

MailChimp

MailChimp is a useful tool for customers with simple needs, specializing in pre-designed email templates and integrated surveys. However, MailChimp customers will find many limitations with autoresponder functionality, sales automation, and marketing campaigns. MailChimp has no e-commerce functionality or multimedia ability beyond email. As result, MailChimp is often used as an email tool in conjunction with other software which results in multi-system chaos. A far cry from an All-In-One Sales & Marketing tool.

Constant Contact

Constant Contact creates email broadcasts & surveys, with some social media integration. Constant Contact struggles with targeted and personalized marketing. Infusionsoft enables much more robust tagging and campaign building to ensure the right message is reaching the right customers. To achieve a similar outcome, other software would need to be used in conjunction with Constant Contact. Far from an All-In-One Sales & Marketing tool.

Vocus

Vocus is a competitor in the All-In-One Sales & Marketing tool category, with a significantly larger price tag. With higher initial cost & less setup services, most customers will prefer our Kickstart program to ensure efficient setup. Lending to the price disparity, Vocus requires one full year of services pre-paid on day 1, totaling approximately $3,000. For customers who appreciate 24/7 Support, it isn’t offered until the $30k/yr level. Infusionsoft is built and priced for true small business.

AWeber

AWeber provides a basic email marketing and autoresponder service. AWeber struggles with targeted and personalized marketing. Manual Infusionsoft enables much more robust tagging and campaign building to ensure the right message is reaching the right customers. To achieve a similar outcome, other software would need to be used in conjunction with AWeber. Far from an All-In-One Sales & Marketing tool.

Ontraport

OntraPort is an email and marketing automator with outdated feel and function. Infusionsoft delivers a more modern and feature packed experience for less cost. OntraPort lacks e-commerce functionality, requiring users to utilize multiple platforms and manage customer and email marketing permissions in separate systems, which is cumbersome and leaves room for error. Infusionsoft provides more features at a lower price.

Salesforce

Salesforce.com is an enterprise sales and marketing platform best known for its CRM product. Their suite of technologies includes tools for sales, customer service, email/mobile/social/web marketing, and sales team resource management. Salesforce integrates with ExactTarget, allowing marketers to create tailored digital campaigns over multiple channels, including email, mobile, social and web. Salesforce is expensive and meant for enterprise applications, not small businesses. Integrating it with other systems can be complicated, leading to multi-system chaos. It also lacks an e-commerce feature.

Act!

Act is comprised of 3 separate brands and products for individuals, small businesses and sales teams.

  • Act!: contact and customer management
  • Act! emarketing: email and social marketing
  • Saleslogix: CRM that delivers a complete view of customer interactions with all areas of your company

These 3 separate brands are confusing and complicate implementation (multi-system chaos), even though Act! claims they work in harmony. For small businesses looking for an integrated solution, having to purchase separate solutions is cost prohibitive. Managing 3 separate solutions is also time intensive. Infusionsoft has proven reliability and all the capabilities of Act!, but in one centralized location.

Base

Base positions itself as an all-in-one sales toolbox to track sales, manage customers and grow business. It is a CRM and sales-tracking tool that includes features around lead and customer management, tasks and notes, and sales reporting. Base is an excellent tool for sales, but has little functionality in other areas. It has no email marketing, social or e-commerce capabilities. It can only connect email accounts to integrate mail and contacts; users are unable to create automated email campaigns.

Hubspot

Hubspot is an all-in-one inbound-marketing software aimed at creating more control with less hassle, by consolidating marketing activities spanning the entire sales funnel. Their software provides social, email, content, webpage, SEO and sales capabilities. While the marketing software is powerful, it is expensive and lacks an e-commerce component. In order to sell online or through sales reps, customers must invest in other solutions, which is time-consuming and prone to error. Hubspot also lacks the focus and attention to small business since they are focused on and priced for mid-size and enterprise businesses.

GreenRope

Greenrope is a sales and marketing software for small business. Their application consolidates all business activities into one place. They coin themselves the “first operating system for business.” Their feature list is extensive and cross-departmental (marketing, accounting, etc.). They claim having all these features in a single application makes a small business owner’s life easier, but really, it overcomplicates and makes things chaotic and unfocused. GreenRope’s kickstart package is only 3 hours for $199, nowhere near the level of coaching Infusionsoft users receive.

Conclusion:

We love flying drones and as more and more people purchase them, the airspace will become crowded.  Be smart, learn how to use yours, take them to an open field and master the basics.  As with anything it will be those who abuse the freedom we have to fly now will ruin it for us in the future.
